Welcome to the website for my book: The Should Syndrome: Break Free and Start Living the Life You Want.

My goal in writing this book is to help people realize their potential by discovering and embracing their true selves and learning how to overcome the expectations that get in the way of living the lives they want. Over my 35 years of work experience, I have seen too many people hold themselves back. They are afraid to take risks and afraid to upset the status quo. So rather than fully utilizing their unique talents and gifts, these people spend their lives attempting to fit in, seeking approval and praise from others, and never quite feeling satisfied.

I have been there myself. Twenty years ago, I was on the fast track in a large technology consulting firm. Yet I wasn’t enjoying my success. I felt too much pressure, and I struggled to find balance. I finally decided to take time off to figure out once and for all what I wanted to do and how to reduce the stress in my life. I read countless books and articles, and I soon realized that what was getting in my way were the expectations I had about who I should be and what I should do. I named this condition the Should Syndrome and began writing articles, speaking at various events, and teaching workshops on how to overcome one’s Shoulds. More importantly, I worked on understanding and overcoming my own Shoulds.

Since that time, I’ve been learning to live the life I want. I’ve gotten to know and like myself, and I’ve learned to trust that I will make choices that are right for me.

Breaking through the obstacles that prevent us from tapping into our full potential is a lifelong endeavor. We learn, we grow, and we learn some more. And while the steps are simple, the process of discovery and change is complex.

I hope this book helps you learn about yourself and what you can do to unleash your potential and begin living the life you want. We all deserve that.
